<dc:description>This is a practice-based study of indirect literary translation (ITr) between Arabic and Korean. It consists of two parts: A practical and a critical component. The practical component is an Arabic language ITr, titled بياض [Biadh], of Han Kang’s 흰 [Hin] (Whiteness) (2015), through Deborah Smith’s (2017) English translation, The White Book. Through the practical component, I aim to provide data that can be useful in examining how indirect translations take place. Since there has been no scholarly discourse dedicated to studying how indirect translation is conducted in Arabic, the critical component reflects on the different phases of translating indirectly. Moreover, as there is a gap in the research on indirect translations that take place between peripheries, the critical component of this thesis examines the role of ITr in shaping world literature between two less translated languages, Arabic and Korean, and the dynamics of ITr between non-Western peripheries. It positions ITr not merely as a linguistic tool but as a mechanism that can recalibrate global literary hierarchies. Furthermore, I argue that ITr between less translated languages like Arabic and Korean can serve as a form of resistance to such hierarchies. By bypassing dominant linguistic centres, such exchanges may foster alternative circuits of literary value that decentralise the global literary field.

Thesis is embargoed until 31 December 2028.
</dc:description>
