<dc:description>Music Performance Anxiety (MPA) is a growing concern amongst musicians and research psychologists worldwide. Personal traits such as perfectionism have been widely discussed in the context of music performance anxiety. This thesis sheds light on the role of perfectionism and Traditional Chinese Values (TCV) in Chinese piano majors’ MPA, and their collective influence on music performance outcomes, given the huge number of Chinese piano students and the pervasive influence of Confucianism-based traditional values in Chinese society. Specifically, it identifies key contributing factors to MPA, including self-oriented and socially prescribed perfectionism, and face consciousness, all of which can intensify psychological pressure by reinforcing the fear of failure, self-doubt, and concerns about social evaluation. While some dimensions such as self-oriented perfectionism and the Confucian value of ‘hardworking’ can motivate students and foster resilience, they may also conceal psychological distress and discourage help-seeking.

This research employs a mixed method, which combines both quantitative and qualitative methods to capture a holistic understanding of the influence of Traditional Chinese Values and perfectionism on Chinese piano majors’ MPA. By examining 196 questionnaires and categorising and analysing data from 15 interviews, the study identifies not only the psychological and cultural roots of MPA, but also the structural and pedagogical contributors, such as rigid educational standards, technical overemphasis, mismatched repertoire assignments, and limited emotional support within institutional settings.

The examination of the quantitative data offers a broader perspective, while the qualitative insights provide an in-depth perspective, enabling a well-rounded exploration of research questions. This research identifies patterns and distinctions in the impact of TCV and perfectionism on MPA, providing a nuanced understanding of their roles in MPA by comparing similarities and differences between them, combined with the context of Chinese music education and society.

This research not only contributes more clues to comprehensively understand the causes of MPA and the long-term impact of MPA academically but also provides directions for higher music educators and policymakers to create a supportive environment for Chinese piano majors.</dc:description>
