<dc:description>Oxidations are fundamental reactions in chemistry for adding functionalities to various molecules, in particular the oxidation of alkenes to their corresponding carbonyls plays a key role in organic synthesis. Sustainable processes using molecular oxygen, hydrogen peroxide or tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as the terminal oxidant are of interest as they are environmentally friendly and minimise the amount and toxicity of waste produced. The ability to carry out these transformations efficiently has the potential for widespread application.

Within this thesis both the use of molecular oxygen and TBHP for the oxidation of terminal alkenes to methyl ketones using cationic palladium(II) catalysts will be studied. The aim is to optimise and improve current methods in the hope that more sustainable systems will be developed for further use on an industrial scale. In addition to this palladium(II) catalysts will also be used to convert terminal alkenes into their more desirable isomers.

Thesis is embargoed until 31 July 2030.</dc:description>
