<dc:description>This research seeks to answer the following central question: what is the relationship between identity and Foucauldian control mechanisms, especially as they are experienced in socio-political contexts by minority communities, such as European Roma? Using a mixed approach that combines theoretical analysis with historical exploration and conversation-led, observational fieldwork, this work investigates both historic events and contemporary narratives to make the following claims. This research contributes to the growing schools of thought on citizenship and membership by addressing the role that identity plays in Roma experiences of belonging, and suggesting a connection between political representation, social opinion, and measurable socio-political belonging for members of the Roma communities in European member states.

Thesis is embargoed until 31 July 2030.</dc:description>
