<dc:description>This thesis studies the design, synthesis, and application of new porous liquids. Chapter 1 is a general introduction into the field of porous liquids, with a review of the relevant literature. Chapter 2 studies the usage of hydrogen-bonded capsules as potential hosts for type-2 porous liquids, with the aim of generating switchable porous hosts. Chapter 3 studies the surface functionalisation of existing porous hosts with the aim of generating more concentrated porous liquids in more industrially relevant hosts. This chapter also examines a phenomenon wherein porous liquids exhibit reduced gas uptake in comparison to the neat solvent on which they're based. This is a novel effect. Chapter 4 studies the implementation of porous hosts as reaction media in continuous flow chemistry when using a gaseous reagent. This allowed for an increased product conversion in comparison to a non-porous solvent. Chapter 5 is a conclusion of the thesis, which highlights some potential future work.<br></dc:description>
