<dc:description>Although current university interpreter training has been well established, it is usually focused on improving students’ rendition quality but sometimes neglects to provide systematic training in the delivery of renditions, which can affect interpreting users’ assessment of interpretation. Aiming to address the issue of improving students’ consecutive interpreting (CI) performance, this thesis proposes a course titled Public Speaking Training for Interpreting Students (PSTIS) by using a hybrid approach of component-skill and holistic training and incorporating relevant activities and exercises in non-interpreting fields. Based on this course, the research conducted in this thesis investigated the effect of public speaking training on students’ CI performance in terms of pitch and volume, intonation, pause, posture and gestures, and eye contact. To achieve this goal, trainee subjects (N=3) were recruited to participate in PSTIS and discuss their learning outcomes. Additionally, a pretest-posttest experiment was carried out to further reveal the extent to which their CI performances were improved based on the comparison with those of untrained subjects (N=2). The assessment involved multimodal corpus-based analysis of their performances and the perceptions of bilingual assessors (N=9) and non-Chinese-speaking target audience members (N=8). The results showed that, overall, trainee subjects’ interpreting performances improved more than those of untrained subjects in the aforementioned five aspects. While there were a few aspects in which trainee subjects’ improvements were not satisfactory, this thesis concludes that public speaking training is effective in enhancing interpreting students’ CI performance.

Thesis is embargoed until 31st December 2029.

</dc:description>
