<dc:description>The urban landscape of a divided city is characterised by physical and visual barriers created during past or ongoing contestations and conflicts. In conjunction with psychological barriers, the city is carved up into mental maps of boundaries, territories, shared and unshared spaces. Segregated residential groupings demonstrate socio-spatial territorial boundaries which demarcate the ownership of city space and define its identity. Critical within this context are sites that operate outside the traditional land claims, sites which act as bridging locations between communities. The architecture and planning of shared facilities are reflective of the peculiarities of the socio-political context. This research investigates the potential and limitations of spaces which support cross-community engagement through examining shared architecture building typologies.

Thesis is embargoed until 31 July 2029.

</dc:description>
