<dc:description>The thesis studies the role that freedom of expression should play in transitional societies like Nepal. Its core argument is that liberal approaches have been inappropriately transplanted into Nepal’s legal system through undue influence and have undermined the transition to democracy and the rule of law.

Contemporary approaches to understanding freedom of expression developed without reference to transitional societies are not suitable for societies in formative political and socioeconomic transition stages because they do not sufficiently address their needs and concerns. The ‘classic’ concepts of freedom of expression most closely match the concerns of Western societies and do not address the socioeconomic and political concerns of other societies, particularly those transitioning out of conflict. Thus far, much of the current debate on freedom of expression that has dominated theoretical discussion has failed to consider societies undergoing socioeconomic and political transitions out of conflict.
</dc:description>
