<dc:description>
Borderlinks 2 is the second iteration of Borderlinks, drawing as performance, and presented under the definition <del>Drawing in the Expanded Field</del>. The drawing process first expanded into performance in the Drawing Research Group at Loughborough University in 2025 as Borderlinks 1, which I have written about in (Vol I, Ch 3.3).

The main theoretical basis for the research work is Bracha L. Ettinger's Matrixial Borderspace. In this performance set, sections of the Matrixial Borderspace are in a transtextual relationship with the final unpunctuated episode of James Joyce’s Ulysses, referred to as Molly Bloom's Soliloquy. This practice-based research questions how the Matrixial Borderspace can encounter Ulysses through Molly Bloom and drawing. James Joyce's canonical modernist novel, published in 1922, has a final unpunctuated episode, dedicated to the voice of Molly Bloom and is a site of feminist intervention in her character.

The performance set has notably expanded from Borderlinks 1 to include many more drawings as transtext objects, a term I am using from Ettinger’s matrixial theory. I have written about the drawings in the thesis (Vol I, Ch 3.3). A list of the drawings is as follows:-

(1). Text from The Matrixial Borderspace as collages and drawings behind the performer are written about in Vol 1, Ch. 3.3, and in Vol II, P/folio 9, Figs 71-83)

(2). Molly's soliloquy from Ulysses is presented in different forms derived from drawing processes discussed in (Vol 1, Ch. 3.3) and including the whole text of Ulysses embedded in the Sodabreadbookobject. It is written about in (Vol.1, Ch.3.3) with visuals in (Vol II, Portfolio 10, Figure 93)

(3) A feminist mask for Joyce’s … is an unfinished title for an object containing the word ‘feminist’ mentioned only once in Ulysses in the Circe episode. These drawings are written about in (Vol. I, Ch. 3.3) with visuals in (Vol II, Portfolio 8, Fig. 62).

Filmed as a live performance with an audience for the second time as part of The Drawing Lab on 24 February 2026 in the Fine Art Department at Loughborough University. It provided an audience-based framework to experience a one-woman monologue with improvised sections and transtext objects. A transcript of the performance is available in ( Vol II, Script 2, p.160)

With many thanks to the Fine Art and Photography Departments at Loughborough University and to Rachel Gadsden and Yige Bau for Drawing Lab support, and for recording the performance videos. My thanks to Deborah Harty and the Drawing Research Group at Loughborough University for feedback and support.

© the author

</dc:description>
