<dc:description>
Nitrogen (N) pollution is a global threat to the health of aquatic ecosystems. While mangroves are recognized as efficient filters of reactive N, their N-removal service may vary across coastal geomorphic settings. However, whether N cycling-baselines differ between contrasting estuarine and open-coast mangrove settings remain poorly understood. To address this, we quantified rates of denitrification, anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox), and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) in both mangrove forests and adjacent bare flats across the two settings. Actual N-removal rates (denitrification + anammox) were 18-fold higher in the estuarine setting, where elevated external nitrate, muddy organic-rich sediments, and compressed oxygen penetration depths drove the anaerobic N loss. In contrast, DNRA dominated nitrate reduction in the open-coast setting, fueled by high dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to extractable nitrate ratios. Mangrove effects on N cycling also differed between settings: mangrove presence suppressed DNRA in the estuarine setting, but enhanced N-removal potential in the open-coast setting by elevating DOC and reducing oxygen penetration depth. Extending these findings with a global synthesis, we show that mangrove forests could reduce functional differences in sediment N cycling between contrasting sedimentary settings. Together, our results suggest that coastal geomorphic setting is an important driver of N-transformation pathways and N-removal benefits, highlighting the need to account for shoreline heterogeneity in coastal biogeochemical assessments.
</dc:description>
