<dc:description>
This dataset is part of the data collection ZIN-IN-NGT-videos (https://doi.org/10.21942/uva.c.8558478).

About the content of the data collection

ZIN-IN-NGT-videos is a data collection containing video recordings of 4,083 sentences in Sign Language of the Netherlands (NGT), which are frequently used in the interaction between parents and young children.

The name of the data collection, ZIN in NGT, can be translated from Dutch to English either as ‘SENTENCE in NGT’ or ‘APPETITE for NGT’.

Each sentence in the collection was filmed with up to five cameras, simultaneously, from different angles (L,M,R,A,B). All recordings of a sentence share the middle-camera base name (m_base, e.g. M20241216_1234), which includes the recording date in YYYYMMDD format.

All videos have been annotated in ELAN with three tiers: Nederlands (Dutch translation of the whole sentence), Gebaar-voor-gebaar (sign-by-sign Dutch translations) and Signbank gloss IDs. The Signbank gloss IDs match signs occurring in our data with entries in the NGT lexicon on Global Signbank. Each of these entries on Global Signbank is associated with semantic and phonological information, see https://signbank.cls.ru.nl/datasets/NGT/.

The data collection consists of 72 datasets: videos per recording date (ZNN_video_YYYYMMDD_partN), ELAN and subtitle files (ZNN_annotation), per-frame body and hand keypoint estimation data derived from the middle camera video recording (ZNN_pose, ZNN_sam3dbody, ZNN_hamer) and a codebook with the file mapping (ZNN_codebook).

About the creation of the data collection

All videos have been recorded at the SignLab video recording studio at the University of Amsterdam in 2024-2026. The data collection has been created through a collaboration between UvA’s SignLab (www.signlab-amsterdam.nl) and TYD (www.tyd.nl). We are currently writing a paper describing in more detail how the data collection was created. A link to the paper will be added here once the paper is published.

License

All data is shared under a CC-BY 4.0 license.

Funding

The creation of this data collection has been supported by ZonMW, NWO, Stichting Handgebaar, Stichting Vrienden van Effatha, and by the University of Amsterdam through the research programme Language Sciences for Social Good.

Related data collection

A related data collection, ZIN-IN-NGT-animations (https://doi.org/10.21942/uva.c.8723797), provides annotated 3D animations, created with motion capture equipment, for all sentences in the current data collection.

About this dataset

Zin in NGT (ZNN) is a corpus of 4,083 sentence recordings in Sign Language of the Netherlands (NGT), recorded at Signlab (University of Amsterdam / Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences). Each recording was filmed from up to five cameras and annotated in ELAN with three tiers: Nederlands (Dutch translation), Gebaar-voor-gebaar (sign-by-sign glosses) and Signbank ID glossen (NGT Signbank lexical identifiers). All files of a recording share the middle-camera base name (m_base, e.g. M20241216_1234) and one timeline. This dataset holds the video files (MP4, H.264, 1440x1252, 59.94 fps) recorded on 2026-01-20, part 1: middle (M), left (L), right (R) and additional (A, B) camera angles of the same sentences. Side-camera files carry their own take numbers; use file_mapping.csv in ZNN_codebook to group the files of one recording. The codebook (ZNN_codebook: codebook.pdf, codebook.txt, file_mapping.csv) documents file naming, annotation tiers and the mapping between all files of a recording.
</dc:description>
