<dc:description>
The attached data collection is incorporated within the framework of an innovative study at the interface of ethology, zoology, ecology, and physiology disciplines. Relying on non-invasive methods, i.e., cameras installed at a distance and implanted communicating heart rate loggers, the multi-level response of a captive colony of Humboldt penguins was monitored without human disturbance when facing the approach of a non-human intruder, i.e. a rover (remotely operated vehicle). Given the lack of investigations of these features in a predatory/intrusion context, the influence of the intruder's appearance, i.e. color, and its way of approach, i.e. continuous or discontinuous, was studied.

Eight datasets are provided in the 'final_data_files' folder, corresponding to specific aspects of the response analysis to thepresence of this intruder :

- 'behavior_final_data_2023.csv' summarizes behavioral observations from video recordings dated from 2023 coded tanks to the BORIS software (v7.10.2),
- 'behavior_pilot_data_2021.csv' summarizes behavioral observations from video recordings dated from 2021 coded tanks to the BORIS software (v7.10.2),
- 'delay-order_vigilance.csv' summarizes delay and order for first events of vigilance from video recordings dated from 2023 coded tanks to the BORIS software (v7.10.2),
- 'delay-order_flight.csv' summarizes delay and order for first events of flight from video recordings dated from 2023 coded tanks to the BORIS software (v7.10.2),

- 'overview_comp_duration.csv' compares the physiological stress duration assessed following the presence of the rover or a human inside the enclosure,
- 'overview_comp_stress.csv' compares mean and maximum heart rates recorded during rover experiments and anthropogenic presence,
- 'summary_data.csv' presents all the heart rate data collected across the rover experimental conditions, i.e. combination of color and approach pattern,
- 'final_concat_HR.csv' compiles behavioral and heart rate data to account for the effect of physical activity on heart rate.

Furthermore, the second folder 'rover_tests' contains elements to redo the analyses from scratch, including some video recordings of the ROV approach in 2023 and the penguin reactions, as well as a representative picture to identify each member of the colony.

Additional information concerning the structure of the datasets is available in the READ.me file. The 'rover_experimental_protocol.pdf' file details rover tests, data collection, and behavior analysis.
</dc:description>
