This book is a mosaic of words and images from people whose lives have been impacted by the borders of and within nation states. Each in their own way, contributors tell us something of the brutalities of the United Kingdom’s ‘no recourse to public funds’ immigration policy, which prohibits many migrants from accessing the vital support and services needed to live.

The book was produced as part of the Shadows research project, with the support of artist Meera Shakti Osborne and designer Britt Permien. It furthers understandings of the ways destitute migrant families and unaccompanied young people with insecure migration status – both those who are undocumented and those with time-limited visas – make and sustain their lives in the absence of mainstream welfare support in England.
