<dc:description>
Data and Python code accompanying the study “Ecological zoning adds conditional information on productivity in persistent forest-dominated locations in China”.

The dataset covers 9,947 persistent forest-dominated locations in China during 1990–2018. It includes mean annual gross primary productivity (GPP), environmental variables and National Key Ecological Functional Area (NKEFA) categories. GPP represents each whole grid footprint, including its nonforest portions.

One integrated package contains the analysis data, scripts, reference results, figures and source-verification tools. It includes the fragmentation and nighttime-light checks (S13), geographical comparisons and placebo regions (S14), spatial-error models and terrain checks (S15), and a forest-age sensitivity analysis (S16). The forest-age variable is a 2019 proxy, rather than an age history for 1990–2018. NKEFA categories were compiled by Wang et al. (2024) from the 2010 and 2016 designation lists, matched by county code to the 2023 administrative division using NGCC 1:1,000,000 basic geographical information from webmap.cn. Reorganised counties are represented by successor units: 657 units occur in the layer and 436 in the primary sample. Original source files must be obtained separately; README files explain the sources, instructions and limitations.

Authors, in manuscript order

Pedro Cabral

Guojie Wang

Xiaofeng Ren

Chenxi Zhu

Zhen Yu

Evgenios Agathokleous

Erwen Xu

Wenmao Jing

Yuanjie Deng

Shuangao Wang

Ana Cristina Costa

Funding

National Natural Science Foundation of China (42275028, U22A20592); Gansu Province Science and Technology Plan Project (24JRRG034, 25JRRG027); Gansu Province International Science and Technology Cooperation Project (25YFWG001); Special Project for Improving Scientific Research Conditions under the Science and Technology Plan of Zhangye City (ZY2024KY01); FCT, I.P., UID/04152/2025, MagIC/NOVA IMS (https://doi.org/10.54499/UID/04152/2025); European Union – NextGenerationEU, UID/PRR/04152/2025 (https://doi.org/10.54499/UID/PRR/04152/2025).
</dc:description>
